Dave Explains...
The jazz tradition has given the world artists who were just incredible talents, individually as well as collectively. With great appreciation for such talents, I am listing many of the wonderful players and groups I have been privileged to hear during jazz’ most exciting years. This is not only to remind us of all their timeless creativity but also to stimulate younger enthusiasts to go back and investigate the very best of that jazz.
Being at a live event opens up whole new dimensions of listening, as follows:
- Physical approaches to technique within each particular style
- Stylistic conceptions and how they are performed
- Conceptual and technical interplay and how that evolves between artists
- Personal performance habits relating to both accompaniment and soloing
- Group personality and how that affects each committed artist
Of all the concerts and club dates I have attended over the years, some will remain with me forever. My lingering impressions of those events are what I describe on these pages.
