This was a missed opportunity I will forever regret. The Bill Evans Trio had scheduled a Christmas week performance, but, as luck would have it, a snowstorm began brewing early on the evening of the concert. I decided not to brave the weather with the promise to myself that I would see Scott LaFaro and the trio in 1961. Can you imagine my shock and dismay when I opened up Down Beat the next summer and discovered LaFaro’s obituary?
