One glance at the rhythm section players and you gotta know Woody would feature them. At one point, the whole band actually got off the stand and let the rhythm section play a concert set.
On an up-tempo blues, Feldman was actually featured for approximately 10 minutes playing vibes, then piano, then drums. The young crowd, many of them music students, roared their approval. As the most knowledgeable jazz attendee, I was assaulted afterward by numerous students who rushed up to me exclaiming, “You didn’t tell us Feldman played drums that great, too.”
My answer: “I didn’t say anything about that because I never thought they would even consider featuring him on drums.”
Needless to say, Victor Feldman was the talk of the campus for the following week.
